The NAYDSA Welkom Chapter was established in 2015, spearheaded by the dedicated efforts of Mr. Ekunseitan. Recognizing the need for a united front among the Yoruba community in the Welkom area, Mr. Ekunseitan tirelessly worked to gather Yoruba in Welkom community and its environs, and foster a sense of belonging and camaraderie. His vision was not only to unite the community but also to encourage participation in civic responsibilities and social activities.
The inauguration of the Welkom Chapter was a resounding success, with significant turnouts at the initial meetings and events. The association focused on promoting Yoruba culture, language, and community welfare, which resonated deeply with its members. Active participation flourished, and the association quickly became a vibrant platform for Yoruba in the area.
However, the enthusiasm that marked the early years began to fade around 2018. Internal challenges surfaced as some members started to disregard the directives of the Executive Committee. This lack of cohesion created friction within the ranks, undermining the foundation that Mr. Ekunseitan and his team had worked so hard to build.
Support was sought from the Bloemfontein Chapter and the national body, which made efforts to mediate and restore unity. Despite these interventions, the situation remained precarious, and the Welkom Chapter was dissolved in 2023.
After the dissolution, a revamp committee was established in late 2023. Despite the passion and commitment of the committee members, including support from the Bloemfontein Chapter and the national body, these efforts proved abortive.
However, early 2024, a fresh start was launched with the formation of a new NAYDSA Welkom Chapter. Following due process, the former association was duly dissolved, paving the way for this new beginning.
As of today, the new NAYDSA Welkom Chapter is still in its formative stages. Currently, the association conducts meetings every middle of the month at members' homes. Plans to elect officials and secure a permanent meeting venue will be prioritized in the upcoming months.
